A little while ago we took a look at the ICY DOCK MB122, which was an excellent product. Today we take a look at the ICY DOCK MB722, which contains many of the features of the MB122 plus a few extra.
Packaging:
The packaging of the MB722 was very informative and did a good job of highlighting the features of the product. ICY DOCK also did a good job of designing the layout of the information and pictures so the buyer was not overloaded with information.
Features:
- Drive Fit : 1 x 3.5″ Hot Swappable SATA I or II
- Device Fit : 1 x 5.25″ device bay
- Internal drive security, exchangeability, expandability and maintenance capabilities
- Advanced drive monitoring system built internally w/ LCD visual & audio indicators
- Stylish faceplate with aluminum cooling body
- Warm air outtake fan cooling of drive
- Safeguard key lock capable of power control to disable data accessibility from others
- Accessible Master/Slave setting thru the drive tray without having to physically remove the drive
- Compact size version in SATA is available for limited depth integration
The MB722:
The MB722 is made almost completely out of aluminum. The only parts that are made out of plastic are the very front and very back of the device. The aluminum construction allows the MB722 to act as a hard drive cooler as well.
The front of the MB722 features an LCD, which displays the temperature of the hard drive inside the tray. The LCD has a blue back light and can easily be viewed at a 40 – 60 degree angle. The only complaint I have about the LCD is that the backlight color cannot be changed.
ICY DOCK gives the user the option to customize the MB722 by adding interchangeable face plates to the device. Not only are the face plates interchangeable, they are illuminated as well. While the face plates are interchangeable, the user must buy any additional face plates, as ICY DOCK only includes one face plate.

While the ICY DOCK MB722 trays are hot swappable, they are not interchangeable with any of ICY DOCK’s external enclosures. This was the biggest advantage to the MB122 and it is unfortunate that the MB722 does not share this advantage.
Conclusion:
The MB722 includes many of the same features as the MB122. Illuminated and interchangeable face plates make the MB722 a better choice for a modded case. However, I was a little disappointed that the MB722 trays were not interchangeable with any of ICY DOCK’s external enclosures. ICY DOCK’s MB722 is still an excellent product and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an internal hard drive enclosure.
