Product: Razer Copperhead Gaming Mouse Razer has safely established their reputation with gamers from the beginning. From the Boomslang with a ball mechanism, to the recent Diamondback, Razer’s products have set standards in performance and quality. Now, jumping into a new technology, Razer will have to establish itself as a power player with laser mice. Logitech has already shown the power of laser optics with the MX1000 and G5 mice, nothing less is expected from Razer.
Specs-
Packaging- Razer opted to use the standard packaging we see, consisting of a plastic shell in a cut out cardboard box. It is a good looking box, with plenty of protection for the mouse. Contents-
Setup- Even though drivers are included with the mouse, they are not required, but are recommended. Windows will pick the device up after a few seconds, and install the necessary drivers. You will be able to adjust the speed with Windows, as well as the side buttons , without the Razer software. If you would like to change any button mapping and fine tune the mouse, the software is required. Installing the software is simple and straightforward. The Mouse- By far, this is one of the cleanest devices I have seen. An all black finish brings out the clear side grips and scroll wheel. While plugged in, the grips, wheel, and center medallion glow softly. The medallion slowly pulses, a lá Apple Computer, in stand-by mode. Trailing the mouse is a 7 foot USB 2.0 cable with gold connectors. In your hand the mouse feels as clean as it looks. The surface provides a slight positive grip – perfect for gaming. It fits nicely under your hand, and the two main buttons are grooved to keep your fingers in line. I found that the ball of my hand was not supported as much as I would like, and the side buttons are harder to get at. This is due to the ambidextrous design of the device. After about 15 minutes of getting used to it, it felt natural and comfortable. Apart from the mouse not being sculpted to fit right-handers, the only downside to the design is the thumb buttons on the other side of your thumb are impossible to get at. This is not a large problem, as two thumb buttons are enough. The mouse is loaded with 7 buttons, two standard and a wheel, as well as two thumb buttons on each side. By default, the two on the right side are mapped to changing the resolution on the fly. A feature like this can enable you to go from playing a twitch game to file management with the push of a button. One speed may be too high for a certain game, this can help you make adjustments, and no drivers are required. While mousing around, I noticed the attention to detail in the buttons. The front two take just the right amount of pressure to push. The wheel has a clearly defined movement, and a solid middle click. The thumb buttons however take some getting used to. I found I was missing them entirely, as they are tucked into the side of the device. Be that as it may, I was able to get used to them after about 15 minutes, and wouldn’t have them any other way now. The mouse glides well on its Teflon pads, which are surprisingly small, but very effective. Combine this with a quality mouse pad and the thing will fly.
Performance- I was skeptical at first about how Razer would use the laser optics. After using the Logitech MX 1000, I didn’t think a mouse could be much twitchier. I was quite wrong. At 2000 dpi, it is impossible to use for file management without some speed control. After fiddling around with it, I noticed the depth of the Razer software. You can tweak the sensitivity for each axis independently; change sampling rates, resolution, etc. . As for playing games with it, it takes no prisoners. The mouse is functional, dependable, and accurate. If there is a device for the hardcore gamer, this is it. The laser optics give you the flexibility to move as fast as you need to, and on any surface. I tested the mouse on a veneer desk, a high-performance mousing surface, cloth mouse pad, and a mirror. Apart from the amount of resistance specific to the surface, the mouse performed identically on each. The wheel’s motion is defined, perfect for switching weapons. The mouse is nimble and beautiful for precision shooting. Gamers rejoice.
Conclusion- This is the mouse for the hardcore gamer. If you require extreme precision in your mouse, you should consider this, as it is the top of the line model from Razer. For the level of performance delivered by the Copperhead, the price is worth it. It is nearly perfect in all aspects. As a right handed user, I like my mouse to be formed to my right thumb, but it is nice to see Razer providing a great product for all to use. After a little warm-up time with it, I can say it is the best moue I have used.
