Packaging- While seemingly plain, the packaging schema used by Steelpad is refreshing. The product is enclosed in a simple and effective cardboard box, a dying trend. (Don’t get me started on how hard it is to get things out of hermetically sealed plastic) Remember what mother told you, it’s the inside that counts. Case and Glide Feet- To my delight, the pad came with its own carrying case! The case is simple and functional: black cloth with plenty of padding and a zipper pocket for CDs. Surly this is the perfect accessory for taking your slick new mouse pad to the LAN. Inside the CD pocket I found glide feet for use with the Steelpad. These are a handful of slick glide-pads which are self-adhesive and can be used with any mouse. When used in conjunction with the Steelpad S&S, the experience is much smoother. Underneath the pad is a speckled rubberized texture to keep it from slipping around. The top is a hard, random surface for which to mouse on. Performance- Simplicity is key here;: this pad is all about providing a solid experience without anything to detract from it. When in use, the pad stays anchored to the desk, owing to its tacky underside. The surface of the pad is the true star. Given that some mouse pads have tracking problems with the new high resolution mice, I tested the Steelpad with two laser mice, two optical mice, and a ball mouse. While I didn’t have any tracking issues, I would be relucant to use a ball mouse with this pad. The surface is too slick for something as cumbersome as a mechanical mouse. When testing the pad, I was surprised at just how fast the action was. Coming from a cloth mouse pad, and then a desk surface, the Steelpad S&S really made a difference. Gaming was more responsive, and mousing around is much lighter on the wrists with a quality pad. I would frequently fall off my cloth pad, which is why I moved to the desk a number of years back. With the Steelpad, I have yet to run out of space. Conclusion- You get what you pay for, and in the case of the Steelpad S&S, that is quite a bit. Overall, it leans heavily on functionality, but that is not to say luxury is out. It looks great and comes with a quality carrying case. The surface is large, smooth, and sturdy. In short, this is a great mouse pad.
Pros- + Functionality Cons- - $40 may be out of some budgets |
